PORT EYNON AND OVERTON NEWSLETTER - AUTUMN
& WINTER 2011-2012.
For news of village events past and to come.
EVENTS
The nine Flea Markets held during
2011 raised a total of £1457 for Hall funds.
At these markets Kirstine Dunthorne, assisted by Richard Morris and Jim
Rafferty, sold books from the permanent bookstall to the value of £877, which
was a wonderful effort. £100 was donated to the church and the remainder went
to the Village Hall Rebuilding Fund.
Veronica’s Easter and August Markets
once again boasted a wide and varied selection of goods for sale, largely
donated by villagers. £1608 was raised for Hall Funds, so thanks to everyone
who helped or donated goods. However, in order to continue running these markets
and raise money for the benefit of all villagers, we are in need of URGENT help – especially on actual sales days. So, if you are able
to give up some time next Easter Friday and Saturday (10.30 – 12.30) please
contact Jean Higgins 390419, as your
help would be gratefully appreciated.
The
sun shone for at least one day in July when the Gower
Stroke Club held their annual fund raising Coffee Morning and Mini-Market.
The group went on to have lunch at The Countryman.

VILLAGE SUPPER
The
Social Committee, formed 42 years ago, decided to hold a Village Supper which
could be enjoyed by all. By popular demand, this became an annual event. Our
next supper is on Saturday 3rd
March 2012, 7.0 for 7.30pm. We hope it will have a Welsh theme with light
entertainment. Tickets will be on sale at the end of January so watch out for
the posters giving details. Come along and enjoy yourselves.
CHILDREN’S ACTIVITY TEAM UPDATE
Our
annual Curry Night took place in July. A delicious, freshly prepared 3
course Indian supper was provided along with a fun evening of karaoke. The
evening received fantastic support from local residents and continues to be a
very successful event.
Looking
ahead... This year’s annual Halloween Party will be
held on Friday 28th October, 6.30pm in the Village Hall. The festivities
will begin again with the children 'trick or treating' their way through
the village down to the hall. Activities, games and a free 'unlucky dip' await
the lucky guests. Fancy dress is recommended to get into the spirit of things
and bring a pumpkin along to enter the best pumpkin competition. Hot dogs, cakes
and drinks will also be available to buy on the night.
Look
out for posters on the notice boards this month advertising this year’s party!
Please contact Julie Harris on tel.391699 to book your place for trick or
treating. This will start at 6pm, meeting at the top of The Boarlands.
This year's
Nativity Play will take place in the village hall on Sunday 18th
December. Rehearsals will be from
3.30 to 5pm every Saturday, from Saturday 5th November.
If your child would like to take part please contact Julie Harris
(details below)
This
year’s children's Christmas Party is on Saturday 10th December
and starts at 4pm. This event is free for children from the village and
accompanying adults. This year the Port Eynon Players are presenting their own
version of the pantomime Cinderella. Father Christmas will be present, as usual,
bearing gifts for the children. Local children will be receiving their
invitations in November. Also look out for posters on the village notice boards
advertising the event. In
the meantime if you would like any more information or would like to make any
suggestions please contact Julie Harris on tel.391699 or email:juharris23@gmail.com

ST CATTWG’S CHURCH
St
Cattwg’s Church has had a quiet period after the flurry of installing the
kitchen and loo last year. We have held a handful of events making use of the
new facilities: the WI came for craft sessions, though these weren’t well
supported, church committee meetings take place regularly as do gatherings for
coffee with the congregation after Morning Worship on the fourth Sunday of each
month. During the Gower Festival, a coach-load of enthusiasts visited us and
were conducted round by Hugh Dunthorne and treated to a lavish tea.
The
concert given by the Burry Port Male
Voice Choir, with Rachel Attwell at the piano and clarinettist Lee Motram,
was a notable success and, at the time of writing, we are anticipating a visit
from the Ariosa Singers, with Reuben
Nicholas, to mark our Harvest Festival. Later in October a Singing Workshop will
be held, hopefully to put a bit of polish on our hymn singing. There is to be a
Poetry Festival on the theme of Remembrance
on November 11th at 7.30pm.
The monthly lunches in private houses for Senior Residents who live alone,
have taken place as planned and been enjoyed. A couple of new hostesses have
joined the roster, which is great news. We continue to be grateful to the Social
Committee for subsidising the churchyard grass cutting and to the Port Eynon
Players for their generous donations from the takings at performances.
CHRISTMAS IS COMING
If
you are concerned about rising prices or worrying about the cost of Christmas,
then make a note of this special offer. ‘Painted
in Gower’, a calendar for 2012, depicts local scenes painted by members of
the PORT EYNON ART GROUP. For a short
time only, the calendar is being offered at two for £10 and
would make an excellent gift for friends and family. Proceeds from the sale
of the calendars will go towards the Village Hall Rebuilding Fund.
